Bottle Vs. Box: Just How Many Glasses of Wine Are In That Thing?

This is a great question to ask, especially if you plan on purchasing boxed wine for entertaining. Running out of wine at your party will not win you the “Hostess with the Mostess” award. Following the box-to-bottle-to glass equivalency chart below will set you up for entertaining success.

The chart lists the popular bag-in-box sizes–1.5L, 3.0L and 5.0L–and denotes how many 750 mL bottles and 5 oz pours are in each box.

BOXED WINE

BOTTLES

# of GLASSES

1.5 liter
2 bottles
10
3 liter
4 bottles
20
5 liter ~ 7 bottles 33

If you are looking at this chart thinking, ‘Wow, I get the 4 bottles of wine in one 3 L box?!?’, we encourage you to check out your grocery store or wine shop and do some price comparisons. You’ll be pleasantly surprised to see that 3L boxed wine offers more value than purchasing 4 individual bottles of wine.

Here are some other facts to consider. Boxed wine stays fresh 6 weeks after opening. So, if you guests don’t drink all the wine you purchased for you party. You can enjoy a glass for nights to come instead of throwing left over wine down the drain.

Also consider the environmental advantages of boxed wine over bottles. Evaluating just the packaging alone, boxed wine uses 91% less packaging materials. This means less energy is used to product packaging materials and less material are sent to the landfill.

Hosting a party soon and planning on serving boxed wine? If so, please leave a comment below. Tell us how it went or leave some handy tips and share with others!

–Cheers!

Lorie, Thanks for the great question! Boxed wines have come a long way in the recent years. Several wineries use bottles and boxes for their wines packaged under the same label. I would highly recommend you give boxed wines a try. Here are a few links to articles that recommend boxed wines.

I bought Corbrett Canyon Merlot 2 months ago, it’s very good, but I don’t drink much, isn’t it time to toss it. I regret wasting so much. Thank You…
