Wine Spectator magazine recently reviewed several Californian boxed wines in their October 2009 issue. This is pretty historic because up until this issue, boxed wines have not been reviewed by the magazine. Wine Spectator is famous for their 100 point wine rating scale. Any wines receiving 85+ points are considered very good by the magazine’s standards.

The article mentions the increasing growth and popularity of boxed wines amongst consumers. Some of the reasons they site for consumer’s change in attitudes towards boxed wines include; wineries putting better quality wine in bag-in-box, boxed wines’ value, and the ability to keep wine fresher longer.

Here is Wine Spectator’s list of top rated boxed wines and their accompanying scores:

Top 5 Boxed Red Wines

87 points Black Box Cabernet Sauvignon Paso Robles 2006

87 points Bota Box Cabernet Sauvignon California 2007

87 points Wine Cube Cabernet Sauvignon-Shiraz California 2007

85 points Black Box Cabernet Sauvignon California 2007

84 points Carlo Rossi Cabernet Sauvignon California Reserve NV

Top 5 Boxed White Wines

88 points Wine Cube Chardonnay California 2007

87 points Black Box Chardonnay Monterey County 2008

87 points Wine Cube Sauvignon Blanc California 2007

86 points Bota Box Pinot Grigio California 2007

86 points Killer Juice Chardonnay California Angel Juice 2007

Fenn Valley is a small family owned vineyard and winery that was born out of a desire to grow premium wine grapes and make world class wines.

The vineyard site, located along the shores of Lake Michigan, was chosen because the unique great lakes climate and deep sandy soils would be an ideal setting for growing grapes and creating wines having a stature and character unparalleled anywhere else.

Our vineyards are planted to traditional European wine varieties that were carefully selected for their ability to thrive in our cool northern climate. Modern viticultural techniques are applied to each vine so that the unique combination of climate and soil are expressed in the grapes and the wines. At their peak of ripeness, our grapes are harvested and converted into wine in our underground cellar, using an artful balance of old world tradition and up-to-date technology.

Our goal is to capture a little of the beauty of the lakeshore region in every wine.

Revelry Vintners is a Washington State winery rethinking the crafting and enjoyment of fine wine. As a progressive producer of premium wines, highlighting the viticultural movement and dynamic quality of Washington State’s Columbia Valley, Revelry is a winery building a tradition of excellence.

Revelry Merlot Tasting Notes

If you’ve ever relaxed in a cozy chair, you know what this Merlot is all about: soft, smooth, and luxuriously deep, with flavors of blueberry and black cherry supported by subtle suggestions of oak and spice.

Washington state’s Columbia Valley yields some of the most flavorful full-bodied red wines in the world. Our Merlot encompasses everything we love about this grape. Featuring fruit from some of the warmer sites in the state, this Merlot is a ripe balance of body and tannins. The fruit from this region is wonderfully balanced – just right for crafting young drinkable wines.
